The high tides of 2025
To your calendar!
Mont Saint-Michel has the highest tides in continental Europe, with a difference of up to 15 metres between low and high tide.
It is particularly at the time of high tides, when Mont-Saint-Michel becomes an island again, that you will appreciate the magic of the site. The Mount, with its feet in the water, perched on the mirror of the sky, regains all its aura and presents itself to you as a majestic islet.
At each high tide (coefficient greater than 90), the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel offers you a spectacular phenomenon.
With one of the largest tidal ranges* in Europe, the natural spectacle of the tide awaits you either at low tide for walkers and shore fishermen, or at high tide to see Mont-Saint-Michel completely surrounded by the sea. If by chance the weather is a little lively, the spectacle will be even more magical.
In the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, the tidal range can reach 13 metres, which is quite exceptional. On a global scale, the Bay of Fundy in Canada has the highest tides in the world with a tidal range of 16 metres.
*Tidal range: This is the difference in water height between high tide and low tide.
Understanding the tide
The Moon causes the tides by attracting the oceans towards it like a magnet. When it passes over the ocean, it attracts it and this creates a sort of "hump". Thus, on each side of this hump, depressions are created: this is low tide. But as soon as the moon passes beyond the ocean, the hump relaxes and thus extends over the coastlines: this is high tide.
Why don't we observe this everywhere? In the Atlantic Ocean, which is very deep, there is a huge volume of water. While in the Channel Sea, its smaller neighbour, there is much less depth and therefore less water. Imagine then that the large bulge of water from the Atlantic Ocean enters the Channel Sea in a few hours. The latter therefore fills up much more significantly and its water level is then much higher.
The Earth is constantly rotating on its axis and the moon revolves around the Earth. This creates more or less regular cycles that cause tide times to differ each day.
A spring tide is when the Moon and the Sun pull in the same direction, their gravitational forces combine to pull harder and lift the sea more. This phenomenon occurs during the equinoxes, in March and September when day and night are of equal length.
In the bay of Mont-St-Michel as in other bays around the world, the phenomenon is more significant: the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel acts as a funnel between Brittany and Normandy, so as soon as a high tide occurs, the water is blocked, trapped as if in a dead end.

To enjoy your walks and hikes on the coast in complete safety, remember to plan your escapades according to the tide times, thanks to the website www.maree.info. Remember that it is extremely dangerous to venture alone into the Bay, including in the immediate vicinity of Mont Saint-Michel.
Find out about high tides every day (from a coefficient of 90) in the "practical information" section of our website.
To observe the high tides, Roche Torin, Grouin du Sud and Pontaubault bridge are ideal places. The ideal is to come 30 minutes to an hour and a half in advance to discover this wave which can reach several tens of centimeters and which forms at rising tide. The higher the coefficient, the more impressive it is.
